Council Offices to become fewer, 'greener' and save money
Conservative led Cornwall Council agreed to reduce the number of its offices and achieve significant savings. These include reduced carbon emissions and lower maintenance bills.
The programme aims to have principal offices in Camborne, Truro and Bodmin with
satellite offices throughout the County providing services to West, Central, North and
South East Cornwall. This will see the reduction of offices from 78 to 30.
No decisions have been made on individual satellite offices. Each case will be treated on
its merits with a full business evaluation being done. Capital receipts from property
disposals will be re-invested in better services.
The case for the Unitary Authority was based on a rationalisation of property and service
functions. This was decided upon by the then Lib Dem controlled County Hall against strong public opposition. Conservatives, whilst being against the break up of the more local Districts, do now have to carry forward the consequences of that decision and take the required action. This takes the form of a first step outline property strategy which should see savings. Conservatives are determined that detailed consideration and consultation will be undertaken at every further step along the way.
Jim Currie, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Corporate Services said, “We intend to take a
measured approach. The implementation of specific proposals will require close scrutiny to
determine the impact on staff, the prosperity of local towns and ensure value for money.
The overall aim is to improve services for the people of Cornwall”.
