Sarah Newton delighted by on-going commitment to crucial Convergence funded projects
Truro and Falmouth M.P. Sarah Newton has welcomed the news this week that two vitally important development projects are guaranteed continued support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) Convergence Programme.
Following the announcement of a freeze on projects funded by the ERDF Sarah has been in daily contact with Ministers and the Treasury, appraising members of the Government and officials of the possible long term implications of the move.
On Friday 16th July the Government issued a statement that pledged that ‘Projects in pipeline that do not involve single pot match-funding will continue to progress.’ Projects secured by this announcement include the Next Generation Broadband rollout, a scheme which will provide businesses in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly with superfast broadband, creating up to 4000 new jobs.
This good news applied also to Exeter University’s proposed Environmental and Sustainability Centre, due to be built at the Tremough campus in Penryn over the next two years. The centre, now assured of £23 million of Convergence funding, seeks to put Cornwall at the pioneering edge of green technological research.
Sarah Newton welcomed the development:
"I fully support Cornwall's ambition to be the leading centre of research, innovation and enterprise delivering sustainable energy. I will be working hard to ensure that local businesses and their employees benefit from this large investment at Tremough.
The construction industry in Cornwall was particularly badly hit by the recession. Building the new institute provides an opportunity for both existing construction workers and offers the potential for new apprenticeships.”
